Quantum of Solace Review

Quantum of Solace is the 22nd Bond movie in Albert F. Broccoli's brilliant British franchise. The film is a thrill from the second it starts and doesn't stop until the credits role an hour and forty minutes later. Though QoS is a relatively short Bond film Marc Forster has directed a very bold and rather pensive new era Bond film. While Quantum of Solace is the biggest Bond movie ever made, because it was shot in six different countries and is a massive production, the plot doesn't allow this film to stand on it's own as it's own film within the Bond canon, because unless you have seen Casino Royale you'll be somewhat lost on what's happening in the film.
Daniel Craig oozes equal parts feirce intensity and brutish elegance as James Bond, as he is driven by vengeance, to find out who is behind the evil organization that was responsible for the death of his lady love Vesper. I do have to say I wish there had been more Jeffrey Wright, in QoS, he's so simple yet so brilliant as the lone American Operative on Bond's side as Felix Lighter. Olga Kurylenko holds her own as a new era Bond girl, but I think the second best performance in the film goes to the brilliant Mathieu Amalric and I'm not just saying that because I want move to a chateau and spend the rest of my days in France having him read Zola to me. While Craig oozes an animalistic ferocity, Amalric projects an evil creepiness that left me uncomfortable and intrigued which one usually and coincidentally only sees in Bond villains. While QoS was entertaing and action packed it certainly was not as fluid as intelligble as Casino Royale and in the end, only left me more excited for whatever the next Bond film will be.
My rating: 8/10 while Casino Royale was a 9/10

"Life is so fucking good I can taste it in my spit."

With the Quantum of Solace release just a week away, I've been thinking about the movie I'm convinced got Daniel Craig the job (not even the shot, but the job itself) as James Bond, "Layer Cake," & the title of this post is one of my favorite lines in the film, which was adapted from J.J. Connely's acclaimed novel. its a phenomenal well crafted, gangster film directed by Matthew Vaughn who produced "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" & "Snatch." I watched it again recently to tie my over til next weekend, and forgot how the film is full of amazing British talent, like Michael Gambon, Kennth Cranham, Dexter Fletcher, Ben Wishaw, oh and Sienna Miller is in it too. [I actually heart Sienna, yes she's beautiful and always surrounded by scandal, but sometimes she actually acts in movies and is [retty brilliant in them, like "Interview" and "Factory Girl".]
so if you haven't seen Layer Cake and you're a fan of Daniel Craig, gangster films or great movies in general, definitely check it out. you can watch the first 7 minutes below to get a taste.

even James Bond prefers Barack Obama to John McCain

In an interview with Parade Magaine Daniel Craig was asked a "deeply American question":

'Who do you think would be the better James Bond—Barack Obama or John McCain?'

Craig doesn’t hesitate. “Obama would be the better Bond because—if he’s true to his word—he’d be willing to quite literally look the enemy in the eye and go toe-to-toe with them. McCain, because of his long service and experience, would probably be a better M,” he adds, mentioning Bond’s boss, played by Dame Judi Dench. “There is, come to think of it, a kind of Judi Dench quality to McCain.”

And clearly Pierce is pro-Obama as well.

...and with that said here's the video for Another Way to Die the
theme song to Quantum of Solace .

The "Quantum of Solace" theme is called...

"Another Way to Die" and it's performed by Jack White and Alicia Keys. with "Quantum of Solace" set to open in less than 2 months, I decided to take a trip down memory lane and feature the 4 Bond themes that all happened to be from when Pierce Brosnan was 007. i've been a fan of James Bond for as long as i can remember, and obsessed with James Bond Theme songs just as long, due in part to the 007 Marathons TBS, they used to run. the old Bond themes were literally derived from the films titles, that turned out to be equal parts ridiculous and awesome, just like a Bond movie.

goldeneye-tina turner burns it down as shes wails and belts this song. plus she always looks good and she's like 70. hell i wish i looked that good right now.

tomorrow never dies - this is so 90's which is why they got sheryl crow to do it. but she certainly hits those high notes...well enough for a bond theme

the world is not enough - Garbage needs to put out another album immediately! or as soon as shirley manson has a break from "the sarah connor chronicles"

die another day - i love madonna but this is just utterly preposterous. though watching it totally makes me want to start doing yoga and get totally toned.

trailer trash- "Quantum of Solace"

i've been hesitant about watching and blogging about the new James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" since the trailer debuted over a month ago. not only am i huge fan of the franchise, and have a great deal of respect for and admire the talents of Daniel Craig and the director Marc Forster, but i just knew no matter what this trailer looked like i was going to see this movie. i've only seen "Casino Royale" 12 times (basically whenever it's on TV,) but know i'll be watching it again before 11.07.08 because QoS takes place right where CR left off.
