Oh my wow I forgot Ingmar!

While regaling you with my love of Sweden I completely forgot one of the most famous, talented and brilliant people to have ever come from there, Mr. Ingmar Bergman. Ingmar was an actor, a playwright and stage director, with a rather impressive filmography. Bergman directed his first film Crisis in 1945, with first cinematographer Gunnar Fischer and together they found a way to synthesize theatre and the visual image, and went on to work with the many of the same actors over and over again. In 1956 Bergman directed The Seventh Seal,and his most famous film to date. It is about a medieval knight who returns home from the cruisades only to encounter Death waiting for him on a desolate and rocky beack. The knight challenges Death to a fame of chess, knowing the inevitable result but plays for time, so he can discover the value of living.

Years later in 1965 Bergan directed Persona which some believe is his true masterpiece and his most complex film, is about a nurse that is put in charge of an actress who can't talk and finds that the actress' persona is melding with hers. If you have the chance to see any of his films do they're fantastic.

And now here's a little treat for you, I've been posting Flight of the Conchords clips all week because the Season 2 Premiere is available at FunnyorDie.com, though it doens't premiere on HBO til January 18th,2009. FoC is quite possibly one of the most innovative and entertaining shows on television and if you haven't seen it I recommend checking out the first season DVD about these Kiwi crooners.

I am totally and utterly obsessed with Sweden

So much so I'm tempted to go to IKEA to munch on meatballs and meander through the massive edifice. I've had a fascination and appreciation for all Nordic countries since elementary school thanks to Marcus Christensen, but Alexander Skarsgard helped kick my interest into all things Swedish into high gear this summer, as did this Wall Street Journal Travel article from not too long ago. Prior to me fully immersing myself into all things Swedish, all I knew about Sweden was that I'm not really a fan of their fish, it was synonymous with IKEA, Alfred Nobel- creator of The Nobel Prizes was from there, they gave the world ACNE Jeans, ABBA & Peter,Bjorn & John are the only musical acts I can think of from there, I'll sadly never go to Valhalla, they have Ice Hotels like in "Die Another Day" and Stockholm Syndrome wasn't something I wanted.

Alexander Skarsgard

Don't know much about Sweden? Well Wikipedia of course offers the basic historical and factual information on the third largest country (by area) in Western Europe, while The Gateway to Sweden lists so much information, I could barely scratch the surface, and Visit Sweden offers everything a tourist could need. It's also at the center of space tourism in Europe and some of the best stargazing on the planet. If/when I finally go there I'll make sure to post and take plenty of pictures and hopefully come back.

trailer trash- Terminator:Salvation

I've adored Christian Bale since "Little Women," so I'll basically sit through anything he's in. Conveniently he's fantastically talented and generally stars in great films. So when I heard he was going to be in the new Terminator: Salvation I was really excited, until I saw that Common was it. I literally went flaccid. Don't get me wrong I like Common enough, and understand why so many people find him so darn wonderful, but almost every movie he has been in has sucked donkey balls (Street Kings, Wanted & Smoking Aces) in one way or another. I trust McG's directorial vision, because he can handle bid budget action, plus Anton Yelchin is so flippin adorable I want to ask him out on a date, share a banana split and strictly enter into PG-13 territory with him. But like I said, Common is in this movie, so I'm pretty damn hesitant, hopefully Sam Worthington is as hot/talented as studio heads thinks he is and cancels out the whole Common factor.

"if you choose something great i think it's fine to keep wearing it"

Goddess divine Vivienne Westwood calls it the way she sees it.

"She's so hot, she's like a curry..."

"Why can't a hetereosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that his booty is fly?"

"Does it make you sick when you look in the mirror to see how handsome you are and other people are disfigured?"

Don Draper's hair IS better than Jon Hamm's but he's still the bee's knees. If the video doesn't work (it's been acting a bit hinky just click on the link for "Between Two Ferns" which will redirect you to the "show's" site.)

A Sunday Wedding

So I went to a wedding in New York a few weeks back and my mom finally remembered that she took a handful of pictures at the reception. They're basically only of my brother, his girlfriend and me but I still wanted to share because I thought they were pretty darn cute, sadly there isn't a great picture of the vintage lace, strapless dress I wore (I was going for an homage to late 50's early 60's glamour a la Betty Draper), but will make sure to get one the the next time I wear it.

I can't stop making this face and wish I could but for some reason I always think it's hilarious in mind...clearly it's just awkward/ugly

"Maybe they aren't ready for that kind of vag talk?"

Some of you may be familiar with Zach Galifianakis' brilliance, if not behold the greatest talk show to ever appear online (well on FunnyorDie.com that's under 5 minutes.)

Van Gogh Colors of the Night Exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art

Starry Night Over Rhone 1888

"It often seems to me that the night is much more alive and richly coloured than the day."
Vincent Van Gogh
The Potato Eaters 1885

Vincent Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists. I hold the man and his work in the highest of esteem. He's up there with Shakespeare, Marc Jacobs and Santa Clause. The Museum of Modern Art is hosting an exhibition of a portion of his work entitled Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night you can see the exhibition online or at MoMA through January 5th,2009. So if you can definitely check it out it's breathtaking.

Cadillac Records Review

Cadillac Records is the based on the true story of how Rock and Roll began. The film was written and directed by Darnell Martin (who by the way is an incrediblybrilliant and beautiful woman) and spans decades, starting in the early 1950's when Leonard Chess meets Muddy Waters adn creates Chess Records which was endearingly nicknamed Cadillac Records, because Chess would gift his artists with a shiny new car whenever they made a hit record. Jeffrey Wright and Adrien Brody are two undeniably talented men who play Waters and Chess, respectively and these real people to life that certainly doesn't glorify their behavior or the pay for play scandals of the day, but brings to light what a lot of people did not know; that Muddy along with his harmonica player Little Walter, portrayed fearlessly by Columbus Short and Chuck Berry, played to perfect affect by Mos Def, that these men were the founders of what would become Rock and Roll. I won't go into further detail, though my love and passion of Rock and Roll is undeniable, I simply cannot do this fantastic film justice with an abbreviated or any sort of review. Though I can say it is a wonderfully executed film with stellar performances from every cast member, even Beyonce as Etta James (though it was difficult at time for me to seperate her from the character.) If you love music, rock and roll or care about pop culture, go see this fantastic film, that has an equally fantastic soundtrack. My rating 8.8/10

Who throws a shoe? Honestly?!?

Apparently Iraqi journalists do at lame-duck President's.
This is from a couple of days ago, but still utterly unbelievable and hilarious...

...which of course made me think of this

"Why am I the only sour cherry on your fruit stand?"

Driving into work today I saw this mobile fruit stand and it made me think of The Kills' "Sour Cherry" Enjoy 2 rad versions of the song below.

the world is too much with us

I find myself coming back to this beautiful poem time and time again. It was written by William Wordsworth in 1806 and resonates now more than ever.

THE world is too much with us; late and soon,

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:

Little we see in Nature that is ours;

We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!

The Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;

The winds that will be howling at all hours,

And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;

For this, for everything, we are out of tune;

It moves us not.--Great God! I'd rather be

A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;

So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,

Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;

Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;

Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.

photo envy

The title explains the feature better than I could ever could. Though it's genesis arose when I was admiring the photographic work of Hedi Slimane. So below I've decided to share some photos I am intrigued by, love and wish I had taken.
