OH MY WOW GENERATION KILL IS FANTASTIC!

i did it! i watched the first episode...ok well i watched most of it and fell asleep but Generation Kill is incredible! once tennis is over, and hopefully before the Canes game i'll be able to watch some more, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this mini-series. there were so many aspects that were reminiscent of Band of Brothers, The Wire, Three Kings and Jarhead, but the show and it's characters maintain an identity, plot and focus like no other program i've seen before it and loved every second of it. the entire show -well the 50 of the 68 minutes i saw- were unbelievably funny, probably because the shocking and bitter truth of what these men "went" through was unbelievable. i commend David Simon, the cast and crew and HBO for bringing stories like these to light. but more than anything i am thankful, grateful and honored to have actual men and women dedicating their time, skills and most importantly their lives to the service and protection of the United States of America. politics is a messy business, but the protection of freedom is even messier and i'm glad that every division of our armed forces is doing what they can to help clean up that mess.

Beethoven vs. Tennis

The mens semi-final is on and Federer is slowly but surely destroying Novak Djokovic to get to the finals. But am I watching? No because "Copying Beethoven," is on. Ed Harris stars as the curmudgeonly genius and Diane Kruger plays a young music student, who is helping him "copy" his Ninth Symphony. Ed Harris is pretty entertaining and pretty ridiculous (I can only assume he did something similar in "Pollock.") but I must admit the only reason I'm watching this is because Matthew Goode is in it...plus Beethoven's incredible music.

UPDATE: Djokovic lost in 4 sets to Federer, who will play the winner of the Nadal/Murray match that's happening right now. The match is on tape delay, though apparently Murray IS UP 2 SETS to 0!

Generation Kill is incredible...and I haven't even seen it yet

9.3.08 7:30 pm
so i'm writing this post without having fully watched the HBO mini series "Generation Kill," but i am going to already claim that is it amazing! you may be wondering how i could make a statement like that without ever having watched a full episode. this article backs my insanity because i could/should have written it, here's how it starts:

I was a huge fan of David Simon's HBO series The Wire. I never missed an episode. You probably read about The Wire, since it was the kind of show that caused 1 million journalists to write 1 million articles complaining that only 1 million people were watching. (Hey, we tried.) So when HBO scheduled Generation Kill, Simon's seven-part miniseries about the members of a Marine platoon during the early weeks of the Iraq war, it went straight to the top of my must-watch list. And stayed there. For a really long time. Unwatched.

I don't remember why I missed the first episode, but I get credit — don't I? — because I DVR'd it. In fact, I DVR'd all of them. They sat in an orderly list on my ''My Recordings'' screen, glowering at me, reproachfully saying, ''You must watch me. I must be watched. Man up!'' I confessed this to a
friend via e-mail, and she wrote back, ''I know just what you mean. This show is constipating my DVR!'
'

by the time i actually post this i will have finally given "Generation Kill" the focus it deserves. David Simon is truly brilliant and i'm really excited to dive into this show before i get carried away by the tidle wave that is the Fall TV season. (to be honest i think i kind of forgot how to watch network TV since the writer's strike; i'm so used to watching the shows i truly enjoy On Demand. which is how i was able to get into one of the most outstanding shows on television "Mad Men.") i'll make sure to report back from the front lines.

I got distracted and missed the end of the match...

But Novak won, because he's being interviewed right now! He's only made it to the semis and still has to face Federer, who he's 2-6 against (which doesn't bode too well.) But he crushed Roddick and I expected him to be too tired/in pain/burned out to do it, so way to pull it out. I'm so happy for him and hope he gets as much rest as possible, since he's got the match of his life ahead of him!

6-2 baby! He's won 73% of his 1st service points while clearly Andy is not winning much of anything.

trailer trash- W

when oliver stone comes to mind i usually think "oh brother, what crazy-ass nonsense does this guy want us to 'think about' now." usually i ignore him, because i haven't enjoyed an oliver stone movie since "Wall Street," but i'm hoping "W" reignites my interest in his work rather than alienate me even more. there'a already been plenty of controversy surrounding the film, that had nothing to do with the production itself, which will hopefully drum up some intrigue and press, for this film, which hopefully magnifies the errors of a man, we are all too well familiar with.

OMFG IT'S FASHION WEEK

A LOT is about to happen so i'll try to keep this short and just post more later since there isn't too much to cover yet. though i must admit i'm already excited about the buzz and i'm not even in NY. maybe because ANTM premieres tonight, or maybe it's just because i truly have a passion for fashion, but these are a few things i'm pretty jazzed about:

  • Chris Benz's Spring 09 Collection- it's inspired by JOHN ADAMS!...ok well kind of, but i just read this little article that said:
His Spring 2009 collection looks back at the history and meaning of
American sportswear, taking pre-Revolutionary style as its jumping-off point. 'Yeah, I watched ‘John Adams.’ But only because my friend Mamie Gummer is in it. What’s interesting to me, beyond the details of period dress, is the attitude that underlies it—that specifically American attitude of OK, it’s time to loosen up. We’re going to do this our own way.'

i'm excited to see how he makes these ideas come to fruition, because i think his ideas are exciting and silly, but his clothes aren't necessarily my style. below is one of his revolutionary era inspired sketches.

  • while i'm 1000% sure that whatever Alexander Wang has come up with is intriguing and will be very feminine but totally influenced by street style. But how girly will he go for spring? Based on the new line of shoes he's started desiginging (pictured below,) I'm thinking his shit is going to be fierce.

  • Balenciaga will be incredibly constructed, bold, and imaginative. How will Nicholas Ghesquiere blow my mind now?

  • Jil Sander will have incredibly clean lines, fun colors and a finish that's somewhere between sterile and austere in the most elegant expression of those words.

  • Proenza Schouler's ability to bring a touch of sweetness into everything they do, makes me giddy for their spring collection, to the point where i know i'll want to start wearing outfits inspired by them now!

  • And last but not certainly not least what are Cushnie et Ochs (pictured below) going to roll out for their big debut, which apparently has an "American Psycho" theme !?! this female design duo is being heralded as the next Proenza Schouler, so i'm very, very excited to see what they have come up with on the runway, and on their blog.

Santogold goes on tour...but not stopping in Miami again!

Santogold is on tour in support of self-titled debut album. i saw her perform at ps14, back in july '07, and i've been absolutely crazy about her since, so i wasn't too annoyed when her songs were played in the background of commercials all summer long. she was supposed to play Lollapalooza, but bailed to open for Coldplay. you can check out her dates here, sadly she's not coming to Miami, but hopefully she will in the new year, or maybe, just maybe she'll play Langerado.

Scooting around town

"i want to kiss you all over [with black radiance,] and over and again. bum, bum, bum. til the night closesss in!"

ice cream man!

look how tough that scooter looks next to all those bikes. in the words of fleetwood mac it "goes it's own way!"

This is how we roll...literally

trailer trash- the secret life of bees

below is the trailer for "the secret life of bees." this movie looks really great and is based on a best selling novel. the main reason i posted this was it gives me a chance to indirectly mention the new "90210" that starts tonight, because i have a huge crush on Tristan Wilds, who happens to be in both. yes Tristan was also on the greatest show ever made, but he's just so damn cute i had to mention him somewhere.

Novak moves on to the quarterfinals

He just won a 3 hour 45 minute match and will play the winner of the Roddick/Gonzalez match, "whoever I play will be in better shape than I am." Keep on, keepin on Novak and congrats on the win!

trailer trash- how to lose friends and alienate people

i adore simon pegg. "hot fuzz" is one of my favorite movies, and i'm really to see whatever he and edgar wright come up with next, but for now he's co-starring in "how to lose friends and alienate people" with the unbelievably hot megan fox and the incredibly talented/handsome jeff bridges. kirsten dunst is in it too and i'm kind of surprised that she doesn't completely suck in the trailer, which was hard enough to watch. the likelihood of me seeing this movie in the theatres changes everyday, we'll see come october.

I love the US Open

It turns out that there's record attendance at the US Open this year. The tournament is expecting 780,000 people during the fortnight, which is 180,000 people more than were watching tennis 10 years ago. I'm just happy people are excited about tennis. Especially people aside from John McEnroe, who has apparently covered almost every major match that's happened since the tournament has started. He's actually spent so much time in the booth, the rest of the crew is wondering when was the last time he slept. "Sleep is overrated" was his response. Soon after a new stat popped up on screen:

MCENROE COMPARISON
Hours covered: 96
Hours slept: 12

And now he's talking about the air guitar championships & guitar hero, while they cut to the live music being performed out on the plaza.

I'm glad Venus Williams is winning 6-1, 1-1 in the 2nd set, so the team can shoot the breeze during the beating Radwanska is getting.
