trailer trash - District 9

I remember first reading about District 9 on my flight back from Coachella in EW's Summer Movie Preview, and being immediately intrigued by the fact that independent film was an allegory for apartheid in South Africa, and just happened to be produced by some guy named Peter Jackson. With he movie opening Friday, it's the focus of the cover story for EW's latest issue, on newstands now. I really do hope this movie is as good as it's been built up to be, or at least really entertaining.

"Moon" Review

Moon takes place in the not so distant future when "Helium -3"is mined on the moon and sent back to earth to provide us energy. The film follows a man named Sam Bell, played by the always brilliant, Sam Rockwell, who is the sole man that works at the site, and has 2 more weeks left on his 3 year contract and can't wait to get home. The only company Sam has is a computer named Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey in a blatant homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL.) Though after Sam is injured after thinking he sees something while out collecting Helium 3, another guy named Sam shows up and things get really weird.
I love Sam Rockwell & he is in every single scene of the movie, which he definiely pulls off, but the pacing is incredibly slow and 97 minutes felt more like 197. It was definitely a thought provoking film, directed by David Bowie's son Duncan Jones, but the most glorious thing about it was Gary Shaw's cinematography & that shred of hope that I held on to that there'd be some Bowie on the soundtrack or even a minor reference to The Man Who Fell to Earth.

My rating: 8.2/10

Star Trek Review

Since there are just soooooooooo many movies coming out this summer, I'm going to keep these review short and sweet. While I've always been a fan of sci-fi, I never was a Star Trek fan but this movie made me one. J.J Abrams is a more than capable director, that excels at telling a great story that just happens to be action packed (ex. season 1 of both Alias & LOST.) Not only is the film cinematically stunning from the startm the acting holds up too throughout considering what a broad ensemble it is. While Chris Pine is technially the "star" beacuse he plays Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Zachary Quinto (of 'Heroes') owns the movie as Spock. Simon Pegg of course does a brilliant job with comic relief, Anton Yelchi...well he's just too darn adorable not to mention and Karl Urban is a stone fox. There's more I could say, but everyone, their mother and their uncle Adolf has built this movie up so just go check it out for yourself, since I have and probably will again.
My rating: 9.5/10

trailer trash- The Day The Earth Stood Still

"The Day The Earth Stood Still" is a remake of a 1951 sci-fi film with the same title, though at some point during the press tour someone is probably going to refer to it as a "re-imagining" of the original, so it doesn't seem like Hollywood is completely out of original ideas. i love sci-fi and jennifer connely. i'm willing to sit through most keanu reeves movies, no matter how preposterous they are, and he's actually one of the best people the could have cast to "play an alien." but the real reason behind me wanting to see this movie is "Mad Men's" Jon Hamm, though there's only 1 close up profile of him in the trailer, he still makes my heart flutter, though after watching it i realized his character probably dies...which sucks but i'm just happy to see him be cast in anything.
