elliot smith
when I was 14 I literally fell in love with the music of Elliot Smith after seeing Good Will Hunting which was chock full of his utterly beautiful songs. After buying the soundtrack and every one of his albums I could get my hands on I immersed myself in his dreamy tunes of lost love, heart break and hope. When I think about falling in love I think about him and the effect his music had on me. Sadly Elliot

Mmm, why hello there (a completely gratuitous Michael Pitt post)
For some odd reason Michael Pitt has put my libido into hyperdrive. This overwhelming need to promote his talent and adorableness isn't a total shock since he's been on my radar since he was on Dawson's Creek as Michelle William's much younger bf Henry, back in 2000. He's been keeping himself busy since with plenty of fantastic indie fare like Gus Van Sant's Last Days which was inspired by Kurt Cobain's supposed last moments on earth;Bernardo Bertolucci's sexually charged The Dreamers, and the incredibly twisted Funny Games and has just been cast in Martin Scorcese's new HBO show starring Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire. I think the major factor for the ignition of my lust for him, was when I came across the picture above in British Vogue (with his girlfriend model Jamie Bochert,) plus he kinda looks like someone I made out with during Art Basel.

Oh my wow
The first time Joaquin Phoenix came into my life was in 1996 when I came across Gus Van Sant's "To Die For," on cable. I was intrigued and tittilated since I was way too young to be watching that movie (by the by if you haven't seen this movie I highly recommend it, Nicole Kidman, Casey Affleck, Matt Dillon and Ileana Douglas round out this dark comic thriller.) I didn't know how to speak Spanish yet so I wasn't sure how to pronounce his name and was fascinated by this boy named "Jo-a-quin" with a bit of a cleft pallet, undeniable talent and was River Phoenix's brother.
By the time he was nominated for an Oscar in 2000 for "Gladiator" and again in 2006 for "Walk the Line," everyone knew who he was and how to pronounce his name. So when I heard a few weeks ago he was giving up acting completely to pursue a career in music I thought "This has got to be a joke. That's gobble-dee-gook Joaquin."

Sadly (for the time being) this is no joke and below is footage of him rapping at some club in Vegas
While watching all I could think was “Knick-nack paddywhack give a dog a bone, this old man came rolling home.” And then he fell off the stage.

Milk Review

Milk is Gus Van Sant's biopic about Harvey Milk the first openly gay person to hold public office in the US. Sean Penn is stellar as the eponymous character and gives a riveting performance, but Josh Brolin's as City Supervisor and Harvey Milk nemesis, Dan White, was so brilliant, thinking about him still leaves me uneasy. While Sean Penn is Milk, the ensemble that includes an incandescent James Franco, Emile Hirsch is annoyingly bareable, Joseph Cross is sexily serious, Allison Pill is a badass bitch and Diego Luna is the brilliant gay neurotic best friend I never wanted, hold the film together. I must add that the film is gayer than Brokeback, and I mean it's overtly sexual and based on real events and uses actual news footage from the day, but certainly not sexually graphic. Sean Penn will be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar and quite possibly win, which I hope is only one of the reasons as to why you should check out this great film. My rating: 8.9/10

trailer trash- MILK
"MILK" is Gus Van Sant's biopic of Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay elected official. This movie is total Oscar bait, and will be more comprehensible than 2 of his most recent films which were both incredibly unconventional in terms of format, Elephant and Gerry. the cast alone is pretty stellar, Sean Penn stars as Harvey Milk, while James Franco is his lover. and no that's not Ellen Page in a jerry-curlish fro and glasses, it's actually Alison Pill, and yes that Emile Hirsch is rocking the same exact look, but he is actually able to pull it off. & not surprisingly Josh Brolin looks as brilliant as always.
