I'm waiting for a gentleman to dedicate this song to me....

While I've been in love with Mos Def since I scuffed one of his kicks outside The White Stripes show at the Hammerstein Ballroom back in 2003, his album "The New Danger" is one of my favorites. And surprising been pretty integral in a number of my relationships over the years. I actually flew up to Baltimore to see Mos in concert for a first date, & I somehow managed to end up with a brand new copy from a different ex well after that relationship was over. While those relationships soured, my musical/artistic respect for Mos certainly has not and I still think "The Beggar" is quite possibly one of his best love songs & I'll admit I'm still waiting for him someone to dedicate it to me. Til then I'll just keep dating Jon Hamm.

I woke up this morning and this was the first thing that came to mind musically was Mos Def's "Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March." The lyrics pretty much summed up how I was feeling, I just hope I don't turn into a sweet gangsta woman pretty killa woman...unless I end up like this lovely couple or this bad ass one.

Cadillac Records Review

Cadillac Records is the based on the true story of how Rock and Roll began. The film was written and directed by Darnell Martin (who by the way is an incrediblybrilliant and beautiful woman) and spans decades, starting in the early 1950's when Leonard Chess meets Muddy Waters adn creates Chess Records which was endearingly nicknamed Cadillac Records, because Chess would gift his artists with a shiny new car whenever they made a hit record. Jeffrey Wright and Adrien Brody are two undeniably talented men who play Waters and Chess, respectively and these real people to life that certainly doesn't glorify their behavior or the pay for play scandals of the day, but brings to light what a lot of people did not know; that Muddy along with his harmonica player Little Walter, portrayed fearlessly by Columbus Short and Chuck Berry, played to perfect affect by Mos Def, that these men were the founders of what would become Rock and Roll. I won't go into further detail, though my love and passion of Rock and Roll is undeniable, I simply cannot do this fantastic film justice with an abbreviated or any sort of review. Though I can say it is a wonderfully executed film with stellar performances from every cast member, even Beyonce as Etta James (though it was difficult at time for me to seperate her from the character.) If you love music, rock and roll or care about pop culture, go see this fantastic film, that has an equally fantastic soundtrack. My rating 8.8/10

trailer trash - Next Day Air

This movie will probably get lost in the insanity of mega blockbusters, that will be opening every weekend til almost the end of August, but I thought I should give Next Day Air a shout out since I'm in love with Donald Faison (& everything he does) and Mos Def. For some reason it kind of reminds me of a film that was too funny for the "Friday" franchise meets a crappy Dave Chappelle movie.
